Once I first stepped foot into this amazing exhibit in the O2, I felt like I was stepping into Michael Jackson’s life. The tour started off with a short video filled with live footage of Michael Jackson from his tours, then we were lead into the individual exhibits. The first display was dedicated to the Jackson Five and his early life. Seeing his actual costumes that he wore was incredible. Every piece was either silk or covered completely in Swarski crystals. They even had his infamous sparkly glove, fedora, black trousers, sparkly socks, and loafers. All the mannequins were life-sized replicas of his body, so I finally got a chance to see how tall he was, how broad his shoulders were, how big his feet and hands were…everything. For me, it made Michael seem real.
One of my favorites videos that they showed inside was a video showcasing where and who he drew his dancing inspiration from. They would show old-schoolers like James Brown and Fred Astaire doing the move then they’d show him doing the same move. Michael took simple things and made them extraordinary. That was how genius he was. My favorite part of the exhibit was seeing he lyrics to “Beat It”…handwritten! It was amazing to see his actual handwriting. I was speechless and I almost didn’t believe that it was really his actual handwriting. The words to this song are incredible and inspiring at the same time and to see that he wrote it in one sitting left me awestruck.
We stayed for about two hours, but really, I could have stayed there all day! There was so much to look at and so much to read about his life. All over there were quotes from Michael and quotes from celebrities about Michael. There were exhibitions about his humanitarian efforts, his stage costumes, his tours, his music videos, Motown, Neverland, his jewelry collection, and more.
The exhibition ended with a display paying homage to the “This Is It” tour, the one Michael never got to do, the one that sold out within mere hours—eleven being purchased every second! And then there was a section…eight books lined up on a table…for all the visitors to sign and write something. The books would be sent to Michael’s family. I thought this was a great way to end the exhibit. Amber and I spent about twenty minutes writing in the books. I signed a message in three of them. And, man was it HARD trying to come up with something to say! The last quote by Michael Jackson that was posted read something like this, “If you come into this world knowing you’re loved, and you leave feeling the same way, then you can get through everything that happens in-between.”
I feel like I know and understand Michael so much more. I could take any pictures but if you are in London go see it. The exhibit closes on Feb, 28th, so hurry up and get your tickets!
